A Message from Captain Burns

Hi! Welcome to my office!

Stand easy and have a look around. Ah heck, why not take a load off your boots and have a seat. Here’s more than ever wanted to know about me...

I joined the WCC early in January 2007 as an Air Force Recruit, wide-eyed; filled with questions; having a lot of fun getting to know new people from around the world; playing far too many arcade games; cracking jokes and generally enjoying having the best Forums name there is: Bulldog!

My time with Lancaster Squadron was great and by September I was a Flight Sergeant and the Squadron Warrant Officer. That didn’t last too long as I was approached by the Commandant to see if I might be interested in being CSNCO. I leaped at the opportunity and was soon in the thick of it as part of the Command Team – my responsibility really boiled down to representing the interests of all Cadets and NCOs to the Officers regardless what uniform they were wearing. I had an outstanding time working with the NCO Cadre and was surprised and extremely honoured when they turned the tables on me in an act of ‘grand conspiracy’ (teamwork at it’s best) and managed to convince the Command Staff that I should receive the NCO Medal of Excellence. I’ll never forget my wonderful time serving with such an outstanding group of NCOs.

Towards the end of January 2008 I finished my CSNCO term in the rank of Corps Master Warrant Officer and then entered the Officers’ Academy as an Officer Cadet. In mid February I was promoted to Pilot Officer (WCCAF). Then things got really interesting. I was asked to become Commanding Officer of the Web Cadet Ranger Regiment – I leaped at the opportunity (I do a lot of leaping between ‘naps’) and proudly hung up my AF Blues to don a pair of Army Greens. As I saw it (and see it), as CSNCO, I had already been a quarter Army anyway so the change was really no challenge for me although I’ll admit a couple of Rangers are looking twice to see if it’s really me in the Green uniform. I’m proud to be CO of such a wonderful group as the WCC Army and will do my absolute best to ensure we live up to our battle cry, “Rangers Lead the Way”.

Now I should backtrack in time a bit and also mention that at the end of October 2007 I became Department Head for Communications. Very quickly we built a solid team of dedicated Comms Staff from all Units who do their utmost to keep the rest of the Corps informed through our newsletter (called The Listening Post); entertained through Features and other fun stuff; and new members rolling in through our recruiting efforts. I finished up as Comms O at the end of March and have recently been appointed WCC Regulations Officer. By the way, Comms is always keen for new staff members with energy and enthusiasm so if you’re looking for a job (regardless of your rank or unit), track down the CommsO and have a chat.

Now a bit about my style: I’m all about serving others. Sometimes my service to you will mean a pat on the shoulder for a job well done; a whispered word of encouragement when you're feeling a little under the weather or down; or a verbal slap on the wrist if you get out of line or maybe even a kick in the bu… well you get the idea! Regardless, which you receive when we chat please remember that I'm doing it because I want you to reach your full potential here in the WCC. It's a great organization but like all things in life, you'll get out of it in proportion to what you put into it.

While I'm fairly new to the WCC world I've been involved in the Canadian Cadet Movement in one way or another since 1972. I work for a R&D Centre, am married with a few children and a bunch of grandchildren. I'm known for calling things the way I see them but I always try to do that with a sense of kindness and respect - I expect the same of all those with whom I associate. Oh and by the way, if you’re a ‘Troll’ or into playing ‘head games’ we won’t get along well at all and my best advice to you is steer clear of me and anyone I’m responsible for because I just won’t put up with it.

Well, that's probably more than enough about who I am; how I go about business; and what I see my role as. Bottom line: have some fun; learn a new thing or two; make some friends and enjoy your service as a member of this fine Web Cadet Corps. And remember my first goal is to serve you - if you ever need to chat, give me a shout.

Respectfully,

Garry Burns
